Femme Fatales of the North

Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806)

georgiananGeorgiana is usually associated with her extravagant behavior. She was considered the Queen of fashion for her time. She threw herself into the fashion world, and was able to increase the vote for Charles James Fox, leader of the Whig party, in 1784, when Fox was struggling to keep his seat in the Westminster election. Some of her over the top fashion was wearing a three foot high ostrich feathers in her hat.

There was a recent movie with Keira Knightley, the Duchess which depicts Gerorgiana. One of the main themes that the Duchess explains and brings to light is how the fashion of the day was one of the few arenas to which women were able to express their individuality, untouched by male influences. Yes fashion has a note of triviality, but it also is a subtle art if welded properly.

The Femme Fatales of the North has developed their own ideals of a Northern women painting in the wild mountains and cold rivers. They use a unique grouping of fabrics such as wool, plaids, and fleece.” Painting in such extreme weather requires extreme measure of fashion,” says Klementovich.
